[1] In this study we report about the first in‐situ analysis of terrestrial dust devil tracks (DDTs) observed in the Turpan depression desert in northwestern China. Passages of active dust devils remove a thin layer of fine grained material (< ∼63 mm), cleaning the upper surface of coarse sands (0.5–1 mm). This erosional process changes the photometric properties of the upper surface causing the albedo differences within the track to the surroundings. Measurements imply that a removal of an equivalent layer thickness of ∼2 mm is sufficient to form the dark dust devil tracks. Our terrestrial results are in agreement with the mechanism proposed by Greeley et al. (2005) for the formation of DDTs on Mars. Irregular dust devil pressure drops on Earth and Mars: Effect of cycloidal tracks

In a survey of dust devil activity at a desert playa using continuous monitoring by a pressure logger, we have detected a number of pressure drops with complex structures: simple and symmetric drops make up only 25–30% of the total. In contrast to the simple, symmetric single-dip profiles expected for singlecell vertical vortices gliding past the pressure sensor, many profiles have an asymmetri...

Mars: Dust Devil Tracks in Hellas Basin and Argyre Planitia

Introduction: Dust devils on Mars could be an important mechanism for delivery of dust into the Martian atmosphere. Suspended dust in the Martian atmosphere is observed to be ~1-2μm in diameter [1,2,3] and calculations of fall-out rate [4,5] imply an ongoing supply of this fine dust to the atmosphere. Laboratory wind tunnel experiments [6,7], however, suggest that entrainment of fine dust into ...

Convective Vortices on Mars: a Reanalysis of Viking Lander

Introduction: On 7 August 1976 the Viking 2 lander touched down at Utopia Planitia, Mars. Both Viking lander’s primary aim was to look for the presence of organic life on the surface of Mars. The lander also had a comprehensive meteorological package to monitor the martian conditions. The meteorological package included pressure, temperature, and wind sensors, enabling the landers to perform th...

TRANSIENT AEOLIAN FEATURES DETECTED AUTONOMOUSLY IN HiRISE IMAGES OF EL

Introduction: Since the 1970s, images taken of Mars have shown the presence of transient aeolian features such as dust devil tracks, bedforms and windstreaks. High-resolution images of a small portion of Gusev crater were chosen to test the development of autonomous recognition algorithms for these transient features. A pair of images representing a difference of three years in time was analyze...

Directions of Martian Dust Devils Movement Inferred from Automatic Detection of Their Tracks Using Mathematical Morphology

An automatic method for detecting martian dust devils tracks and inferring their movement directions from digital images is presented. The method is strongly based on Mathematical Morphology theory. The work aims to increase understanding about active aeolian processes on the planet, which may contribute to explain similar processes occurring on Earth. Besides, the results can be used to improv...
